Rotary Centenary in York

The 3 York clubs, York (chartered 1921), York Ainsty (1960) and York Vikings (1978) are working together to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Rotary Movement in 1905 by Paul Harris.

The main celebration is a Service of Thanksgiving at the York Minster, followed by Lunch at the National Railway Museum, on Sunday 27th February 2005. The three clubs have created a joint centenary committee that is meeting regularly to look at other potential centenary celebrations, particularly those of a lasting nature. More on this as it becomes available.

District 1040 of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) is asking all clubs to create a lasting memorial to Rotary in their area by planting 100 trees.

RIBI itself is creating a lasting memorial in the form of a new landmark - the Rotary International Centenary Wheel and Forest Project, which can now be viewed for the first time from the air by pilots flying into one of the main flight paths into Manchester Airport from the North and East.

The wheel is a joint project, between Oldham Rotary Clubs, Oldham Council and the Life for a Life Scheme ®. It is a 29 metre diameter orientation platform in the shape of a Rotary Wheel set in the centre of a forest, clearly visible from the air. It is a symbol of international friendship and service.

The site, provided by the Oldham Council, is in Tandle Hill Country Park, Royton on the top of a knoll with good access for parking and disabled visitors.
